LCMHC Supervisor

Before entering into a supervisor/supervisee relationship, here is a chance for you to get to know me.  Reach out if it feels like a good fit

I focus on a developmental model of supervision, which focuses on the your stages of career development..  I utilize teacher, counselor and consultant roles to help meet your needs based on your development as a counselor.  As a teacher I will help teach you counseling skills and interventions.  When I switch to the counselor role it is about helping you gain more self-awareness and growth to more fully understand the use of self in therapy.  In the consultant role I will help you brainstorm ways to help your patients in different ways.

I love helping you find the population and best "therapist you" you can be!  I know how hard it can be to learn what you need and want as a therapist.  My favorite part is helping you find out those answers for yourself.  I have a vast array of experience.  I have worked inpatient, ACTT (community support where we would see clients in their homes to prevent going to the hospital), group practice and now private practice.

I will also utilize role play, modeling, self-report, brainstorming, thinking-out loud and reflections to help you grow as a counselor. The intervention I use as your supervisor will change based on your needs.

You will receive informal feedback from me in every supervision session.  As part of our supervisory relationship, I also ask that you complete a supervision rating form on my supervision of you. I will also check-in with you at the close of supervision sessions in case I need to modify my supervision approach to best match your needs as a supervisee.

We will meet with for one hour for every 40 hours you work.  I charge $125 for each hour session.

We will start by creating three goals for us to focus on.  These goals can be updated at any time, but aid in making our time together purposeful and intentional in supporting your growth as a counselor.  These goals can be as open or specific as you feel you need.

Now the boring things that you need to know based on what our board expects:)

According to NC Administrative Code, each supervision must include “raw data from clinical work which is made available to the supervisor through such means as direct (live) observation, co-therapy, audio and video recordings, and live supervision” (21 NCAC 53 .0208). This raw data can be obtained by either live observation or recording in each supervision session.  We will also utilize self-report to add data to understanding your skills as a counselor. The purpose of clinical supervision is to assist counselors to obtain professional competence in providing counseling services to the public while also protecting client welfare (Borders & Brown, 2005). Data has demonstrated that unsupervised counseling experience does not help trainees to develop competence (Wiley & Ray, 1986). The supervisor functions as an evaluator of competence, assisting the supervisee to develop professionally while also ensuring the client’s welfare and serving as a gatekeeper for the profession (Bernard & Goodyear, 2009).

I may also ask for you to complete process notes to be used during supervision.  Process notes are different from notes utilized for documentation purposes.  These notes will focus on your own process of providing counseling.  You will be asked to choose a client and will then write your process notes answering the following questions

  1. Provide client background

  2. Describe session flow

  3. Hypothesis about the client

  4. Rationale for interventions used in session

  5. Rationale for future interventions

  6. Describe your internal reactions to the client

  7. How do you feel your client experiences you as the counselor
